What Is A Dog Bed?

With a name that’s pretty self-explanatory, it shouldn’t be surprising that a dog bed is the perfect resting place for your furry little one. With fun shapes like a coconut, pineapple, or a banana – you can get a whimsical bed for your dog that also doubles as a fun talking piece.

Unlike boring mats or plain pillows, you can choose a dog bed that is durable as well as fun. And your dog will appreciate it even more than you do.

There are different types of dog beds, like cuddlers, which are perfect for any dog that needs a place to rest during the day. Sleepers are made for long nights, and are perfect if you don’t want to share your bed with your furry friend.

While you may think choosing a dog bed is a simple task – there are actually a surprising number of different styles and choices available. There are cushy beds, bagel beds, indestructible bed, and premium dog beds.

The Invention Of The Dog Bed

While most think the dog bed is a recent invention – the truth is, the first patent for a dog bed was filed all the way back in 1935. A man named John Bins crafted the blueprint for all dog beds that would follow, and even the terminology he used in the original patent is still used today.

While Bins had the first patent on the dog bed, the construction of these products has improved since 1935. Mostly in terms of denser and thicker beds, which are more durable, as well as more comfortable.

Memory foam has been one area of huge advancement, as this material makes dog beds more comfortable, as well as less likely to fall apart. Most dog beds should be washed fairly often, but the materials they were originally crafted with, have now been replaced by fabrics that will withstand much washing and potential chewing from your furry little friend.

These days, dog beds have evolved to include many different types of styles, colors, and patterns. There are nesting beds, dog beds meant for the summer, orthopedic dog beds, and even designer dog beds.

Dog Beds: Stain Resistance

One important factor to consider when choosing a dog bed – how stain resistant is it? Let’s face facts – your dog is going to get mud, dirt, or something else on their bed, sooner or later.

If you choose a more stain resistant bed, that will mean less washing for you. Unfortunately, no dog bed will be 100% stain resistant, but some beds will be less likely to stain than others.

Dog Beds: Smell Resistance

This was a big one for us. While we love dogs, we don’t always love the smells that come with them.

Which is where smell resistant dog beds come in. The more resistant a bed is to dog smells – the happier you will be, trust us.

After weeks of testing, we were able to confirm which dog beds were truly smell resistant, and which were just relying on marketing. While a low price is important when choosing a dog bed – we recommend spending a few extra dollars on choosing a model that is very smell resistant.

Dog Beds: Durability

Durability is probably the most important factor when choosing a dog bed – especially if you have a larger dog. You don’t want the bed to give out as soon as you buy it.

In fact, the factor that will save you the most money in the long run – is simply how long your dog bed will last. Buying a bed that lasts 10 years, compared to one that lasts just 1 year – will save you a fairly large sum of money.

Dog Beds: Toughness

The toughness of a dog bed is also important, especially if you have a large dog or a chewer. You don’t want them to be able to immediately chew through their new bed – which unfortunately is the case with the cheapest models.

This is another reason why it’s important to spend slightly more on a dog bed – the extra money will go towards choosing a bed that will be much harder to tear apart. If you have a small dog, or one that doesn’t usually chew things, toughness is less of a critical factor.

Dog Beds: Shape Retention

Shape retention is an often overlooked aspect of choosing a dog bed. This factor refers to if the bed will stand up to being laid on for long periods of time (especially crucial if you have a larger dog).

Cheap or poorly made dog beds will immediately become misshapen with even moderate weight. Well-crafted beds, however, will maintain their shape even under extreme stressors.

Dog Beds: Comfort

Your dog will love it if you spend more funds on choosing a bed that is more comfortable for them to rest on. Just like higher thread count sheets and super soft pillows will make for a better bed for us – dogs will appreciate a super comfy bed.

Thicker padding, softer material, and lots of cushioning make for the most comfortable dog beds. While it’s impossible to tell exactly how comfortable a dog may think a bed is – we tested each bed for ourselves, to determine a rough overall comfort level for each model.

Dog Beds: Ease Of Cleaning

An overlooked metric, the ease of cleaning a dog bed factored into our overall score for each model. Not only should a dog bed be easy to clean, it should withstand multiple washings.

You’ll also need to easily be able to remove the stuffing, and then put it back inside the bed. Believe it or not, many beds had a hard time with this (seemingly) simple process.

Dog Beds: Ease Of Reassembly

Dog beds also have to be transportable, but it was less of an overall ranking factor in our score. Taking the stuffing out of the bed, and being able to easily put it back in, is also important.

Surprisingly, many dog beds had stuffing that was very difficult to put back into the bed, which resulted in us giving that model a lower score. On the other end of the scale, if a dog bed was easy to reassemble, that raised its score.

Dog Beds: Cost

Dog beds have a wide range when it comes to cost. You can spend as little as $30, or as much as $300. Higher-end dog beds will often be orthopedic in nature, with memory foam stuffing.

These beds can be very helpful for a dog who is older, or who may have joint problems. However, if you have a young and healthy pup, it probably isn’t always necessary to spend $300 on their bed.

What Do I Need To Know About A Dog Bed Before Purchasing?

Every dog is different, so what may work for your dog, could be a bad choice for someone else. There are tons of dog beds on the market – all geared for many different shapes and sizes.

Just like picking your own bed, it’s important to make sure that you choose a bed that distinctly fits your dog. Each dog has its own personality, and what one dog may like, another dog may hate.

For example, if your dog is an older pup (or suffering from arthritis) – they will need an orthopedic bed. This will help them with their muscle pain, as well as stopping your dog from jumping or lifting their legs to get onto the bed itself.

If you have a dog that loves to chew through everything – you’ll want to pick a bed that is close to indestructible. On the other hand, if you want a dog that likes to mark their territory, a stain resistant dog bed may be best.

While it may seem obvious, you’ll also want to make sure your dog bed is properly sized for your particular dog. Too small, and your dog won’t be able to fit on it.

You’ll also want to take a look at how the dog bed may be washed. Depending on the specific materials used to construct the bed, there may be different steps necessary to wash it.
