How To Shop For The Best Sheets

While most people don’t think that sheets are a very important purchase – we actually spend 8 hours a day, for years, sleeping on them. So they are actually a key part of your home life.

The right sheets can make any night more luxurious, and if you’ve ever slept on poor quality sheets – you know how terrible the experience is. When you are buying a new pair of sheets, you’ll want to make sure you get a pair with tons of great user reviews, high quality craftsmanship, and a high thread count.

Nowadays, there are more options available now than ever before. You can choose between bamboo sheets, cotton sheets, linen sheets, and even Egyptian cotton sheets.

However, with this plethora of options, has also come a myriad of poor quality choices. Sheets made very cheaply, that may quickly wear out, and leave you itchy and annoyed.

This is why user reviews are so important – you can make sure your sheets are going to be stellar, before you buy. And while the best sheets are a little more pricey – we recommend that you spend a little more upfront, as you’ll have much better nights of sleeping, if you do.

Cotton Sheets

Cotton sheets are probably the most commonly purchased sheets. They feel soft on your skin, and will certainly make for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Cotton sheets are also very breathable, and will help you stay cool on a warm summer’s night. However, cotton sheets are not the top of the line, and you can certainly spend more, to get a smoother and more luxurious sleeping experience.

Bamboo Sheets

A more exotic choice, bamboo sheets are notable for their eco-friendliness, as well as their silky feel. As you might have guess, bamboo sheets are made from bamboo trees, which help give the sheets a very smooth feeling against your skin.

Linen Sheets

Linen is not our favorite type of sheet, as it is typically a little bit rougher. It does get smoother, with every wash and with time – but we still don’t think it’s the absolute best choice. However, linen sheets are extremely breathable – and that may be a quality you are looking for.

Silk Sheets

Silk sheets are very smooth, and silk itself also contains 18 amino acids. One of the best benefits of silk sheets (besides the smoothness) – they are naturally hypoallergenic.

Fiber And Sheets

When you are purchasing sheets, one important thing to pay attention to, is the length of the fibers. This is sometimes referred to as staples.

Longer fibers will be more softer, as well as longer-lasting. You don’t need to dig for this information – most manufacturers advertise the length of the fibers for you.

Are Bamboo Sheets Better Than Cotton Sheets?

Bamboo sheets are definitely more eco-friendly than cotton sheets – but that doesn’t necessarily make them better. However, there are other factors that many like better about bamboo sheets – such as increased breathability, and an overall cooler sleeping experience. Ultimately though, choosing between bamboo sheets and cotton sheets just comes down to personal preference.

What Are The Best Sheets For Hot Weather?

Many consumers think that bamboo sheets are best for hot weather. However, others disagree, and think that cotton percale, linen, or even Tencel may be the best sheets for hot summer nights. Try ordering multiple types of sheets, and testing them out, to help determine your own personal preference.

Weave Style Of Sheets

Another important factor to consider when buying sheets, is the weave style. There are a variety of options available, such as sateen and percale.

Somewhat confusingly, weave style choice really only applies to cotton sheets, as all other types of sheets only have one weave style. For cotton sheets, sateen weave style is characterized by a shinier and smoother appearance, compared to percale.

However, percale is crisper, more breathable, and lighter. As such, a percale weave may be good for summer – while sateen will keep you a touch warmer in the winter months.

Thread Count Of Sheets

When it comes to thread count, the actual definition refers to the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch. Typical sheets range from 200-800 thread count, and generally a higher thread count means a softer experience.

Higher thread counts also mean the sheet will likely wear better over time, and won’t fray as easily. However, thread count is not everything.

There are even tricks to increasing a sheet’s thread count – that won’t actually result in a better experience. The number of chemicals and how the sheet is put together – will also make a huge difference.

Are Egyptian Cotton Sheets Worth It?

If you want the absolute best sheets – and money is no object – go with Egyptian cotton. These sheets are made from the highest quality cotton in the world, and they definitely feel like it.

Egyptian cotton is – as you may have guessed – imported from Egypt. One of the elements that makes Egyptian cotton so soft – its extra long-staple length.

This length means that the fibers in Egyptian cotton are longer than other sheets – resulting in a silky and smooth experience. If you have never experienced Egyptian cotton sheets before – you’ll know as soon as you sleep on them.

There are a number of different Egyptian cotton sheets to choose from. These varieties include: pinpoint, twill, percale, sateen, and standard.

Standard sheets are the lowest quality, and will not be as smooth as other varieties. Sateen sheets will be softer, as well as more expensive.

Percale is the most popular form of Egyptian cotton sheets, and is also one of the most luxurious. Furthermore, its smoothness increases with every wash – meaning percale may just be the best type of Egyptian cotton sheet to buy.

Twill is another option – but it’s not as comfortable to sleep in, so we don’t really recommend it. Pinpoint is the last variety, and it is most commonly seen in dress shirts.

Pinpoint sheets are not as comfortable to sleep in, so we do not recommend them as a best purchase.

Egyptian cotton also have several other advantages over other types of sheets. For starters, Egyptian cotton sheets will last far longer than other types of sheets (assuming that they are properly cared for).

Additionally, Egyptian cotton is moisture-wicking, which means that if you sweat during the night – the sheets will naturally help you stay cool. Since Egyptian cotton is stronger, softer, and longer-lasting than all other types of sheets – we definitely think they are a best choice.

How To Fold A Fitted Sheet

Folding a fitted sheet is not nearly as hard as some make it out to be. To start with, drape the sheet over your hands.

Next, fold the sheet in half, and tuck in the corners. After this is done, fold the fitted sheet in half again.

Lastly, lay the fitted sheet on your bed, and fold in half again. Voila – you’re done!

How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets?

There is no single “rule” when it comes to washing your sheets. However, once every two weeks is a good general guideline. And – we must say – there is just something so relaxing about sleeping on a freshly washed set of sheets.

What Thread Count Is Best For Sheets?

While there is no set number that is “best” for sheets – a higher thread count means increased smoothness and softness. This is why higher thread count sheets are generally also more expensive.

Sheets are perfectly good quality when the thread count is between 200 and 800 – though we personally like the super-end thread count (think 1,000+!).

The Best Sheets

There you have it – our picks for the best sheets.

Whether you want bamboo sheets, Egyptian cotton, linen sheets, or just the classic cotton – you’ll be able to find a great way to sleep at night. Remember that a higher thread count also means your sheets will be softer, and generally also last longer – so don’t buy cheap sheets.

However, there are a ton of great home accessories out there besides sheets – so be sure to take a look at our other reviews in the home and kitchen categories.
