This 17 piece kit worked great in all of our testing, and we think you’ll also have a great experience with it. It contains every piece you could need for making even the most complicated versions of sushi.

Daechun Sushi Nori

Though not a sushi making kit in the traditional sense, we felt compelled to include this wonderful nori on our list. It tastes absolutely delicious, and has incredible customer reviews.

You can opt for other versions of nori if you want, but we highly recommend this one. It’s also very affordable, which makes it our favorite go-to for making any type of sushi, in the home.

Roll Model Sushi Making Kit

This cleverly-named kit from Roll Model was an absolute delight to use. This budget-priced model also comes with 25 delicious recipes, of which we made a few of.

In short, it’s hard to find a flaw with this kit, and we particularly loved its ability to cut sushi. Another great choice.

What Is A Sushi Making Kit?

A sushi making kit is a clever product, which usually contains 10 (or more) pieces specially designed for making sushi in your home. If you want to save a lot of money, and avoid having to pay for pricey sushi in restaurants – a great sushi making kit is absolutely required for your own home.

Usually you’ll get a mat, a rice paddle, a sushi slicer, and many more pieces – all for only about $20. Each kit needs to be clean after each use, but otherwise it is a breeze to use and care for.

What Supplies Do You Need To Make Sushi?

There are a few essential tools you need to make your own sushi, all of which are typically found in the best sushi making kits. But if you would like to obtain these tools separately, here is what you’ll need.

To start with, you can buy a rice cooker – though this is not 100% needed. It will allow you to cook rice more easily, so if you plan on making a lot of sushi, it’s a smart buy.

Secondly, you should get a rice paddle. This is always included in the best sushi making kits, and it’s a necessity for making delicious dinners.

Besides this, just 3 other elements are truly necessary. A sharp knife (you can specialize by opting for a specifically-labeled sushi knife), a bowl of water, and a bamboo mat.

What Can I Use Instead Of A Sushi Mat?

While all of our recommended sushi kits should come with a mat, there are also other ways to make sushi, without a mat. These are pretty easy (and straightforward options), so if for some reason you are in a pinch, this trick will allow you to to still be able to make your favorite meal.

Quite simply – use a towel. This towel will act like the mat does, and if you cover it in plastic wrap, sushi won’t stick to it, either. A nice little trick, in case you ever find yourself without a mat for your sushi.

Are Sushi Rolls Healthy?

Sushi rolls are very healthy – in fact, fish is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Sushi is also very low in total calories, and has protein – as well as anti-inflammatory omega-3.

The only carbs in sushi come from rice, which can be lessened, if you are making your own sushi at home. Essentially, making your own sushi is not only one of the most delicious ways to lose weight – it’s also one of the easiest.

How Do You Make Sushi For Beginners?

Sushi can seem like an intimidating food to make at first, but it’s really quite simple. The only piece of equipment that might not be included in most sushi making kits, would be a rice cooker, but even this is not completely necessary.

After you’ve gotten your kit out, start by washing your rice. If you skip this step, you can end up with pretty gross results – definitely not something you want.

Once the rice is washed, cook it (however you prefer). For your first time, you can cook it very simply, but more advanced recipes will often include mixing in vinegar (and other ingredients).

Once the rice is cooked, thinly slice all other ingredients (besides your fish). These need to be inserted inside the sushi roll, so they should be cut in very small pieces.

Next, you’ll need to cut your fish. A rectangular cut is not only the easiest – it will work for all fish. From here, put water and vinegar in a bowl, and use it to dip your fingers into, while assembling your sushi.

This unique mixture stops the rice from getting stuck to your fingers, and will allow you to easily assemble your food. From here, your sushi making kit should have specific instructions on how to finish the job, but essentially you will add the rice to your nori first, then fill in with your remaining ingredients (and flavors).

You will want to leave a space at the top of each piece of nori, so you can fold it up. Lastly, roll the sushi together (not too tight), and you’ll be done.

What Rice Is Used For Sushi?

While technically you can use any rice to make sushi (especially in your own home), there are a few varieties that have been traditionally used.

These are typically white Japanese rice (the short grain variety), as well as California rice (the medium grain style). Often, if you buy rice at a supermarket, the bags are labelled, designating their use for sushi. Some experts recommend using a type of rice called Calrose, if you are having trouble finding any of our previously mentioned varieties.

How Do You Make A Sushi Kit?

If for some reason you want to make your own sushi kit, you will only need a few different elements. Basic sushi making kits typically only consist of a rice paddle and rolling mat.

Of course, you can add more elements if you wish. But at that point, odds are, it will be much easier to simply buy a sushi making kit, since the price will be far cheaper than assembling your own kit from disparate pieces.

Is It Safe To Make Sushi At Home?

You most certainly can safely make sushi at home. However, it’s important to be very cautious about it.

Professional sushi prep includes cooking the rice properly, then making sure that the fish is not contaminated with bacteria (most often Bacillus cereus). There are also other things to steer clear of, like not using King mackerel and albacore tuna, as these will have much higher levels of mercury in them.

Can You Use Normal Rice For Sushi?

You absolutely can use normal rice for sushi, as it won’t taste much different. Usually, the chosen types of rice used for sushi are labelled as such.

Often they will be small or medium grain, and helpful labelled “sushi rice”. However, in a pinch, there is hardly much difference in taste, when utilizing other types of rice for sushi.

Is Sushi Rice Healthier Than White Rice?

Actually, the opposite is often true – white rice can be healthier than sushi rice. This largely comes down to the way sushi is traditionally prepared.

Sushi rice is made by adding sugar and vinegar, which not only gives it more calories than white rice – it has a lot more sugar. So if you want to make slightly healthier sushi at home, try using white rice, and using no (or very little) sugar.
