Nothing screams summer like a cute wedge sandal. A wedge heel is flattering (hello longer legs!) while still casual and easy to get around in.

A true wardrobe essential, they pair well with short shorts, sundresses, and everything in between. With that in mind, here are our top picks for best wedge sandals.

Our Top Pick

Sam Edelman Romy Platform Sandal

This has been my go-to casual summer shoe for several years now because it works with almost everything. The cork platform wedge is lightweight and the classic thong upper makes them easy to slip into (and just as easy to kick off and feel the grass underneath your feet.) I wear these to pool parties with a cute bikini and cover up and out for drinks with a sun dress. You don’t just need these shoes…you need them in several colors!

Other Great Picks

Jack Rogers Jacks Demi Wedge

The lowest wedge on the list, this shoe is perfect for casual days. It can take you anywhere from the pool, shopping or out to lunch. With the whipstitched detailing that Jacks are known for and the comfortable thong style, this is a shoe you’ll want to slip into every day.

Giuseppe Zanotti E800169 Wedge Sandal

While admittedly a splurge, this sandal has so much going for it. The blush color is not just on trend, it is truly neutral and flattering to all skin tones. The shiny patent leather and woven rattan look wedge heel make this cute wedge stand out from the crowd. The open toed slide upper provides a bit more coverage than most sandals. You’ll wear these all summer and break them out again for winter resort season.

Jack Rogers Luccia Wedge Sandal

Another winner from Jack Rogers, favorite of the country club set. This is probably the highest (and therefore most flattering) heel you will find on a pair of Jacks. The stacked platform makes it easier to wear into fall than a cork heel, and the signature whipstiched detail adds character. This shoe comes in so many versatile colors…if I had to chose just one I’d go with platinum. It’s the perfect neutral metallic.

Stuart Weitzman Cadence Wedge

This might be my perfect summer shoe! The lightweight cork wedge is 4 inches high, but the platform styling makes it much easier to get around in. The leather upper is available in three colors. My top pick is Bambina, a versatile nude shade, although the black and dark brindle are tempting as well. The unique detailing of the upper gives it a slightly dressier vibe. Paired with paper bag waist shorts and a fitted tank these are perfect for a summer night out.

Michael Kors Warren Platform

This sporty sandal has a look reminiscent of old school Dr. Scholl’s sandals, but the cork wedge won’t make nearly as much noise (thankfully). The cork and rubber platform and lower height give this shoe a more casual look that is perfect with shorts, a t shirt dress or even by the pool, while the Michael Kors logo gives them a little flash. A unique shoe at an accessible price, it comes in several appealing colors.

Coach Gayle Wedge

This classic shoe pairs a luxe saddle colored leather upper with an espadrille sole. The upper gives more coverage than most of the shoes on this list, but there’s still an open toe to show off your pedi. The more conservative styling will work almost everywhere, even in a casual office setting.

Jimmy Choo Nylah Leather Wedge Platform

If you want a wedge that is over the top in the best possible way, here it is! The dramatic platform and crystal embellished buckle are what make this shoe so memorable, though the beige color is actually quite practical, working with everything in your summer wardrobe. This shoe has an adjustable ankle strap and a leather covered rubber wedge. With just a single strap of buttery napa leather over the toes the style is clean and elegant. This shoe could go anywhere from a dressy brunch to elegant cocktail party.

Sam Edelman Neesa Wedge

Another winner from one of my longtime favorites, this is a dressier shoe than the thong style that I wear almost every day. Simply styled with a single strap across the toes and adjustable ankle strap, this sandal moves easily from day to night. The 3 1/4 inch leather covered wedge lengthens the leg, especially if you go with the nude shade.

Stuart Weitzman Marabella Wedge

A brand known for classic styling that stands the test of time, this jute covered wedge from Stuart Weitzman does not disappoint. A wide suede upper provides coverage and comfort, while the open toes give a summer vibe. This is a shoe that can be paired with shorts and casual dresses. It also looks great with the unfinished hem jeans that are showing up everywhere. In the black or basket color this shoe will easily slide into the early days of fall.

What Are Wedge Sandals?

Now that you’ve seen our list of the best wedge sandals, let’s jump into specifics. What are wedge sandals exactly and what puts them into their own special category of shoe?

Also known as wedges, wedge sandals are a fashion staple that offers comfort, height, and style in a versatile shoe. Wedge sandals are an open-toed sandal that has a connected heel and sole that creates the shape of a wedge, giving it their distinct name. The design of wedge sandals dates all the way back to ancient Greece and was worn by Greek actors to mark their status!

Are Wedge Sandals Different Than High Heels?

While wedge sandals can certainly serve as a delicate replacement for a high heel, especially with summer outfits, the two shoes are different in shape and form. The sole of a wedge is much thicker than that of a high heel, which typically has a very thin, stick-like heel to support the shoe. High heels are designed with a significant space separating the toe from the raised heel of the shoe.

Both high heels and wedges provide a boost of height due to their raised heels, but wedges are known for their stability when it comes to balance, with additional support because of their form.

Why Are Wedge Sandals Called Wedge Sandals?

Wedge Sandals have been given this apt name because of the shape of the shoe. With a raised platform base and a heel that is connected from back to front, the shape of the heel forms a wedge.

A wedge, which is usually made out of material such as wood or metal, that has one thick end tapering to a thinner edge. While it is not advised to try to stop your door with a wedge sandal, the wedge shape has given the popular shoe its title and unforgettable look!

Are Wedge Sandals Comfortable?

Wedge sandals are the more comfortable, versatile cousin of the high heel. Wedges are a wonderful choice for someone looking to wear a chic, stylish shoe without having to sacrifice support and walkability. Many wedge sandals are made even snugger by offering a secure strap around the ankle.

The Sam Edelman Neesa Wedge and the Jimmy Choo Nylah Leather Wedge Platform are two wedges that offer this unique feature. Some wedge sandals, like the Giuseppe Zanotti Wedge Sandal and the Coach Gayle Wedge, have fuller coverage with an open-toed upper slide that hugs the better part of your foot, as opposed to thin straps.

Wedge sandals are a terrific alternative for the classic heel.

What Can I Wear Wedge Sandals With?

One of the best things about owning a pair of wedge sandals is their versatility. Wedge sandals have become a very popular summer shoe because of their elegant yet casual look and lightweight, sandal features. The truth of the matter is, you can pair wedge sandals with a handful of different looks!

For a chic, daytime or nighttime casual outfit, pair wedge sandals with a pair of skinny jeans and a tank top. If you’re opting for a more high-end look, match a neutral pair of wedge sandals or espadrilles with a pair of shorts and a bright floral top or a sundress. Creating your perfect outfit is all about you and your personal taste, but it’s hard to go wrong with a great wedge sandal.

Can I Wear Wedge Sandals With Professional Attire?

Unless your office states a strict “open-toe shoe policy”, it’s very easy to make wedge sandals a reliable staple for your professional work closet. Wedge sandals work great with form-fitting, straight-legged (or skinny) dress pants with a floral or button-down top and a nice pair of hoop earrings.

Prefer to wear a short or midi skirt? That works too! As mentioned, wedges are a terrific alternative for the classic heel and can easily tie together a professional outfit. Wedge sandals offer a ton of adaptability.

Can I Wear Wedge Sandals In The Fall?

When people think about wedge sandals, they think of Summer, most of the time. Does this mean you can only wear wedge sandals in the summertime? Of course not! Because they are a sandal with an open toe and open back, they are suited for comfort in warmer weather.

However, neutral-colored wedges (think brown, tan, and black), especially ones that offer a bit more coverage, are perfect for the fall. Pair your wedges with a short skirt and a thin sweater or cover up and you have a great outfit with variety to last you all season.

Can I Wear Wedge Sandals To The Beach?

Wedge sandals offer an elegant, summery look, and can often compliment your legs with their boost of height. That being said, a standard wedge sandal or wedge espadrille is not designed for wearing in water or sand. You will most likely find it uncomfortable while walking in sand, and especially if your wedges have an espadrille bottom, you may find that salt water and sand will impact the material.

Flip flops and rubber sandals are designed to be worn for outdoor activity around water and are a more suitable option for beachwear. If you have somewhere to be after your beach day, pack your wedge sandals for a super easy post-beach outfit transformation!

Can I Wear Wedge Sandals If I Have Wide Feet?

Like many shoes on the market, some brands of wedge sandals will offer a wide size. If you can’t find this option, it’s a good idea to try on wedge sandals that have straps (rather than peep toes). This will naturally give your foot more room.

If you have a narrow foot, peep-toe wedge sandals or pairs with adjustable straps may fit your foot better. If you tend to have an issue fitting into standard sized sandals, it’s best to try on the wedge sandal first to make sure your foot fits comfortably.

Are All Wedge Sandals Espadrilles?

Espadrilles, which have become the most summer-forward shoe, are a simple shoe usually with a canvas top and a defining “jute sole” which is made from spinning and threading coiled rope. The name Espadrilles comes from “esparto” grass, which was the original material used to create the carefully designed rope sole.

Not all espadrilles are wedges, as not all wedges are espadrilles. Espadrilles are a specific type of design and look that is often made as a wedge sandal. On our list of best wedge sandals, the Coach Gayle Wedge and the Stuart Weitzman Marabella Wedge offer a beautiful leather upper with the classic espadrille wedge heel and sole. Espadrilles are a classic shoe often worn with sundresses.
